Remember when I wrote a post on my “Blog Birthday?” I included in that post my goals for this year. One goal was to up my DIY game and get some power tools. I’m here today to say that I’ve upped my game (thanks for the push Gina at The Shabby Creek Cottage) AND I’ve learned how to use power tools, just haven’t made the purchase yet! This is huge. I want to be able to make things, ya know? When Gina suggested the idea of a challenge, (make furniture using only 2X4s) I knew this was the opportunity I needed to get some fire under my feet!
So today, I’m sharing with you my DIY plant stand! Seriously, it’s easy and super affordable. The lumber was under $10 and I bought stain at Ikea and used very little of it.
My idea of creating a plant stand came to me while I was watching two of my favorite plants growing well in their new spots. I’ve slowly been transforming our old formal dinging room into a sitting room. I moved our plants from the living room into this room when the new furniture was brought in. I love them in this room! This room has a large window in it and I’m still looking for ways to “fill the space.” So, it came to me to build a plant stand that was a little shorter than the length of the window and was lower to the ground compared to a bench. I wanted to make sure it was lower than the window sill too.
Materials:
4 – 2X4s
8 – 4.5″ Screws
6 – 1.5″ Screws
12 GRK 3 1/3″ Screws
Sander
Miter Saw
Table Saw
Power Drill
Level
Tape Measure
First, figure out how long you want your plant stand. Mine is 4.5ft long. Cut your boards accordingly.
Next, create a cleat (support) by cutting down a 2X4 with a table slaw. Pre-drill your holes to prevent splitting the wood. My cleat is 6.5″ long and 1.5″ thick. Use 4- 4.5″ screws to secure the cleat to the top of the bench.
For a more appeal, cut down a 2X4 using the table saw. Make it 3/4″ wide and the same length as the cleat. Attached it with 3 – 2.5″ screws.
Next, cut the legs to the length you require. My legs are 16.5″ long. To take away some of the “square” look of the legs, I champered them using the miter saw at a 45 degree angle.
Attach the legs using GRK 3 1/8″ screws. I used three per leg. Make sure your legs are square before screwing them in.
We gave it a quick sand before staining. I purchased gray stain from Ikea. I only stained the top.
I painted the legs in Annie Sloan Pure White and sealed it with Clear Wax. I distressed the legs lightly around the ledges.
I had quite a few plants already bit I purchased a few more over the weekend at Ikea.
I think this room should be called the plant room now!
